Coral Street Shore Dive

When: Sunday April 15, 9:00am – 3:00pm
Where:  Ocean View Blvd. & Coral St., Pacific Grove (map
)

Contact: Christophe Beraud

Cost: Free

Diver Level:  Beginner-Intermediate with cold water experience (during calm surf conditions).  Due to the small point located on the west side, it provides protection when the south or west wind is up.  However, the small cove is vulnerable to a northwesterly wind.

General Dive Plan:  (2) Shore dives starting at 9:00am, with a surface interval of approximately (1) hour.  Max depth will be ~ 60 feet.  There will be a small surface swim (about 20-50 yards depending on tide) before descending to start the dive.  There may be patches of kelp that you must maneuver around.  The bottom is comprised of rocky boulders covered with palm kelp.  There are rocky pinnacles from 20 to 60 feet, which are homes to abalone, rock scallops and nudibranchs - this is a protected area, so look but don’t touch. Many underwater photographers are lured by the beautiful topography with ample light.  Boat dives usually access Chase reef, however if you are up to a swimming 200-300 yards, you could reach this site which is located left of

Coral Street Beach .

Access, Entry and Hazards:  Park on Ocean View blvd. and walk down the short stone staircase to the rock and gravel beach. Gear may be assembled out of the back of your car or transferred to the beach and assembled there.  It is a sandy beach, so it is recommended that you bring a tarp or large blanket to minimize the sand getting into your equipment.

Equipment: Please bring all of your dive gear, which should include: (2) tanks and weights.  It is a recommended that you have a surface signal device, for example a “safety sausage”, mirror or whistle.

General Information: Public restrooms are located at the Golf Course.  The Golf Course is about a 5-10 minute walk.  Keep in mind that this dive site is located on a beach, so you may wish to bring a chair, shade, sunscreen etc. Dogs are allowed on leash. Please feel free bring your non-diving friends/family.
